Dear President Fujimori,

We are respectfully writing to request a meeting with you during your upcoming visit to the United States. It is our understanding that you will be in this country for a meeting of the Pacific Basin Economic Council from May 20-22. We would like to discuss the case of Ms. Lori Berenson, a U.S. citizen, with you while you are here.

As you know, Ms. Berenson was recently arrested, tried and convicted to life in prison by a military court in Peru. While we understand and appreciate your commitment to combating terrorism, we believe that Ms. Berenson should have an opportunity to present her defense in an open civilian court, to have her attorney cross examine witnesses, and to present evidence that may substantiate her claims of innocence.

Please have your staff contact Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney to schedule this meeting. Thank you for your kind consideration of this request.

Sincerely,

Carolyn B. Maloney
