Inmate's parents barred

LIMA, Peru -- The parents of an American woman convicted of belonging to a Marxist Peruvian guerrilla movement were barred from seeing their daughter at a high security jail in the Andes, her lawyer said Tuesday.

"The director of Yanamayo prison said that, since she's been sentenced to life, the first year is to be served in isolation," said Lori Berenson's Peruvian defense lawyer, Grimaldo Achahui.

He said Mark and Rhoda Berenson of New York City, had been wrongly turned away from seeing their 26-year-old daughter because the isolation was supposed to begin only after all appeals are exhausted.
