A Call to Action

President Clinton will be attending a hemispheric summit conference in Santiago, Chile, April 18 and 19. It is essential that President Clinton stand strong for human rights, justice, and democracy, and champion Lori's case when he encounters the Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori.

ACTION #1: Call White House Tuesday, April 14

Call the White House comment line at 202-456-1111, and press 0 to get an operator.

A good message to leave would be:

"Lori Berenson has spent the past 29 months in a harsh Peruvian maximum security military prison under inhumane conditions that threaten her life. She had been sentenced to life in prison by a secret military tribunal in violation of international law. Ms. Berenson has always maintained her innocence but has been denied due process and a real trial in which she could demonstrate her innocence.

When you attend the Summit of the Americas, you MUST take the opportunity to express to President Fujimori that Ms. Berenson's continued imprisonment without a fair trial is unacceptable. Do not by your silence allow her to suffer any longer!"

ACTION #2: Send the above message by Email to President Clinton before Thursday, April 16.

President Clinton can be reached at the following address: president@whitehouse.gov
